Contraction of ekíkún, compare with Olukumi órókún, Àhàn égú, proposed to be derived from a root Proto-Yoruba *-kṹ (“to kneel”). See Yoruba notext (“to stick out”), and kúnlẹ̀. Equivalent to e- (nominalizing prefix) + kíkún (partial reduplication of kún (“to kneel”)), literally “that which kneels”.
